Hey Maja.
Yeah, I think you're right when you talked about how blacks felt very close, even they didn't all agree with each other on everything. Same goes with Jews: since there are so few Jews in the world, there is, by default, a kind of connection between us all.
And I think the point you bring up about the Bush-monkey images is a good one. I remember you told me that during school, and I still agree that, even though the recent cartoon probably was racist, we can't ignore the fact that the monkey thing has been displayed before with Bush.
p.s. this is Isabel, haha.

The thing about that is, while everyone WANTS to be able to go off on their own and have their own rules, it's still a pretty scary idea, you know? Like, in the near future, we're going to have to be adults ourselves, and we think we know so much but when you really look at everything you have to do on you're own... it's scary.
But I agree. You really do learn more about yourself when you start living for yourself, by your rules. Which makes it even scarier because maybe you don't want to find things out about yourself? But I guess it's beneficial and necessary in the end, and at least you'll be more grounded.

You tell him, Jamie.
And yeah, I... can't stand a lot of the people living around here. On one hand, I'm grateful to have grown up in such a privileged area, with a great school system, luxury, and opportunity.
But, to put it bluntly, there are too many stupid people around here. I think the 2008 election really brought out just how stupid. Not because it was Democrats vs. Republicans, but it became racist vs. not racist, sometimes. Like, people you never would have thought to be racist or whatever were saying dumb stuff like, "Well I can't have a black person as a president." THE HELL, YOU'VE NEVER MET A BLACK PERSON, GET OUT.
Also, white Christian males = the worst breed of human, ever.
Well, in this case.

I don't know, I was still angry with Malcolm. He spent his whole adult life preaching that whites shouldn't mistreat blacks and his entire book was talking about how angry he was that whites assumed blacks were like the stereotypes said, etc etc, but then he acted that way right back towards whites, and THEN, he goes to Mecca and GASP! NOT EVERY WHITE PERSON IS RACIST AND EVIL! And his eyes were opened to the world hallelujah.
Even though I was happy that he had finally found some sense, I still wanted to hit him because the whole time it was like, "NO DUH." But not because he had never had a chance to be exposed to whites on an equal level; because he never tried. He went from being discriminated against, to having whites (like that one girl) asking him to give them a chance, to let them show him that they were not all horrible, and he rejected it.
I don't know. I liked him in the beginning, but then he just got on my nerves and that never really went away. Even though I agree with Maja's comment ^ anyway. Because I've had instances in my life where... not that I was racist or hateful to another group of people, but I'd never known them and then meeting them was like, "Oh hey, they're like me!" :)

Ugh, agreed. This is why I still, chapter later, cannot stand Malcolm. He goes on and on about how blacks are oppressed, whites mistreat them, they should take a stand, etc. Which I'm not DISAGREEING with at all. But then he puts down anyone who is not black or Muslim who tries to take a stand for their own group. His activism is sometimes so childish and elitist.
And I obviously totally back you up on the Jewish thing. For example, when he was saying that stuff about Jews and the Holocaust, it really pissed me off. Was he totally wrong? Admittedly, no, he was not. The Jews did have to integrate themselves with the Germans, and then they were caught off-guard when Hitler came around. But Malcolm so strategically left out that the Jews had no choice but to blend in, lest they not be permitted to live freely in Germany at all! What was Malcolm thinking? The Jews say, "Oooh, we don't like being Jewish! Let's be German instead!" Hell no! They suffered oppression either way, but at least it would be limited if they made an effort to become "mainstream," if you will. And then, he was all implying that the Jews brought the Holocaust upon themselves. It almost read like he was saying they deserved it.
al;sdlkfaj I'm going to stop myself before I go off on a nasty rant.
