Olympics

A post about the Olympics is obligatory. I normally disparage patriotism, or, at the very least, extreme patriotism. But during the games, I am vivaciously Team U.S.A. I don't even mind the moratorium of my favorite T.V. shows for two weeks straight.

My favorite athletes for the winter games are Lindsay Vonn and Apolo Ohno. The former, because I feel that she is the protagonist of the women's division in the games this year. Even with an injury, she worked through a nearly impossible course to win a gold. Okay, so she messed up on her next two races. But she won a gold nonetheless; she fought through intense physical pain and skied like crazy. I'm sure she'd been extremely wary of competing under such conditions, but she did it anyway and game through on top.

And, as for Apolo Ohno... well, for one thing, he is gorgeous.

♥!
Also, he's a fabulous skater, has a totally chill personality, and seems like the kind of guy you could take home to your parents. So, yeah, basically I just think he'd make a fabulous boyfriend.

But I really do have respect for all Olympians. They go out there and work harder than any other professional athletes, without any remuneration, just because they are doing what they love and dedicate their lives to. It's incredibly inspiring.

Alright, I'll admit: I COMPLETELY forgot about blogs all week. The "time management" points that will be deducted with most definitely terminate my 'A' grade, in this class, but I suppose that is my own fault as a maladroit AP student.

So, today my best friend forever, Lucas Hall, and I went to the Palisades mall. My father was busy and my mother didn't want to go, so it was an opportune time for me to get some more highway-esque driving practice without my parents around. I remember a time when my parents would seriously deprecate parents who left their young-teens alone at the mall, which is fully of sleeze and perfidy. And now, I'm driving there by myself. I guess my parents are starting to cede their power over me at long last.

Anyway, at the mall, Lucas and I first went to H&M, where I didn't get a sweater. Then we went to Forever21, where everything was absolutely gaudy. After that I agreed to go into Hollister with him. I personally see the store as a behemoth of over sexualized, over-priced clothes that have the potential of turning tweens into spoiled brats. But that's just me.

But just look at this "advertisement:"

He isn't wearing anything! How can they be advertising clothes if he isn't wearing any? Maybe he just isn't wearing any of the clothes because they aren't that great. No offense Lucas: YOU obviously look awesome in Hollister, but you already know that I just don't really get it.

And man, that stuff is beyond over-priced. Par example, take a look at this bracelet:

In case you can't see the price, it was originally $7.95. People, IT WAS A PIECE OF STRING. Oh but, I'm sorry, it went on sale for $4.90. A MUCH more reasonable price for string.

A person that pays almost $10 for a piece of string is just so credulous to believing that brand names will make them ~cool~. I feel bad for the parents that have to deal with their whining tweens begging for this garbage (a.k.a. my parents, circa 2006). Yes, I begrudgingly admit that I used to be a consumer-crazy preteen that is now anathema for me. Alas, we all have our low periods.

But besides Hollister, the mall was really fun. Mostly because I spent it with my twin. There was one point where we were cracking up, completely losing our sang-froid in public (as usual...) about something and some idiot came up in our faces and made a horribly piggish laughing sound, trying to mock our ebullient moment. Well, it didn't even matter, because pig-man only made us laugh harder.

Making fools of ourselves 2010, yeehaw.

I hate Valentine's Day. To be perfectly honest, I probably wouldn't if I were somewhat desirable to men, slash had a significant other to spend the day with. Instead, I'll be spending Valentine's Day with my mother's family and my great-great aunt who will be turning 100 years old. Yahoo.

Chopsticks!!!

Lucas and I just played a game of chopsticks, which he was terrible at. Also, I realized that I have an uncanny resemblance to an anti-Semitic Nazi drawing of a Jew from the Holocaust.

I hate life.

Anyway, Lucas is a TERRIBLE chopsticks player. The worst I've ever seen. He thinks that he won, but we were in the same position. Lucas is just the dumbest person I've ever met. His dirty beard is so ugly. And so is his shirt. Oh and he's fat. Lucas tries to be cool, but fails miserably. As he does with everything else he attempts.

The whiny, malcontent humanoid sitting beside me exhibits paramount stupidity, asking me, its sworn enemy, for grammatical advice in the blog post that it is creating to attempt to humiliate me.

Lawl tumblr is blocked

I personally think it's hilarious. The site was so in vogue, and it seemed to happen almost overnight. But a bit of a stigma began to form for those that used tumblr. People created these emotional, empathetic caricatures of themselves to seem artsy. Certain photographs and phrases became tumblr argot. "Tumblarity" created a type of hierarchy on the site, and everyone became extremely garrulous, posting about things that, frankly, no one else cared about. It kind of became a place for students to redress the woes of the school day.

BUT THEN AHAHA, THE ADMINISTRATION BLOCKED IT. For whatever reason, no one can get on tumblr from their school laptops anymore. While I am a bit disappointed that I will no longer be able to stalk people during physics, I'm highly amused by the few that are completely distraught by this occurrence. People have been saying that the administration has no right to censor the blog. But, uh, actually, it does. Cause it is the one that gives you the laptops in the first place. And, even though no student really likes this fact, it is true that those laptops are meant for educational purposes.

So boo-hoo whine whine, you have to wait to go home to tumblr. Cry more.

Winter break, winter ball

So, our ephemeral winter break came and went. The almost-two weeks were filled with ennui that was more than welcome, and hardly saturnine. I spent the first five days at my home in Connecticut. The rest of the break was spent driving around and seeing friends. I, of course, saved all of my homework for the night before break ended. But, overall, I had a nice break. I had no invidious experiences, and the crux of my time off was when it ended. Not only did I have to go back to sitting in a desk all day, but I had to listen to everyone talking about winter ball.

I didn't go to winter ball. I sort of wanted to, though. The idea of dressing up and going to a dance is alluring, definitely. But, the thing is, I did not have a date. I wasn't even asked, boo. And that can be quite crushing to a girl's self esteem (and when your friends hector you about being a ~nonconformist~ it kind of ends up turning you off even more to such a social event. Plus, I don't think I could stand to coalesce with the many people in the junior and senior classes that I do not, on a daily basis, enjoy being with.) So, no winter ball for Isabel!

I did have a good time last night, though. I hung out with some other anti-social friends of mine, and we played games on the Wii and ate food. And no awkward dancing was necessary.
